Fire Work Fears & Phobias

fireworks-explosion

This applies more to dogs than cats & other pets, but many cats & other pets do get frightened by fireworks. Provide a den or hiding place where your dog or cat can feel safe. See video on advice from Adaptil on how to create a den. Where the video talks about Adaptil, think of Feliway if you have a cat.

Increase your dog's or cat'sfeeling of security by plugging in an Adaptil or Feliway diffuser as close to the den or hiding place as possible, start using the diffuser at least a few days before fireworks are expected. These diffusers are available from Airedale Vets, make sure you do not leave getting one until last minute as sometimes the wholesaler can run out of stock just before Bonfire Night.

Ignore fearful behaviour, such a panting, shaking and whining. Dogs may pick up on their owners anxiety which could make the problem worse. See video advice from Adaptil.

In the run up to Bonfire Night walk your dog when it is still light outside. This reduces the possibility of fireworks being set off and your dog becoming worried.

Make sure all windows, doors and cat flaps are securely closed during fireworks night. This will reduce the chances of your pets escaping.

Provide distractions, for example new toys or chews, while fireworks are happening.

Draw curtains and switch on the TV or Radio, to mask the noise from the fireworks, but make sure the TV chanel does not have a fire work display on later :-).

Try not to leave your pets alone while fireworks are going off, pets will be more relaxed when they have a familiar person with them during this time.

DO NOT punish your pet! This will only make your pet more distressed.

Medications

Some dogs & a few cats are so bad that they need medication to reduce their anxiety. If you think your pet might need medication, please ring the surgery for advice. Please do not leave it until the last minute as we need at least one full working day to get medications ready.
